Nobori Japanese banners, carps, warrior’s Yoroi and Kabuto (helmet), Musha-ningyo dolls and samurai swords are all the part of the display used for the Boy’s Days (renamed to Children’s Day), May 5th, in Japan. Culturally, the Japanese emphasize anything to do with children. The Girl’s day with hina dolls is in March. This Day is to wish for their son's health and future welfare. It is also to inspire boys in their manliness and hopefully bravery, discipline and honor codes come with it.

Originally, Nobori was used in the battlefield to identify the troops, some are to show the warriors where their general was. The others were to shift the troops. It took three men to hold the big Nobori. It was an effective tool in the 16th century when the numbers were exceeding 100,000 in some battles. The drums and trumpets were also used for the same reason.

The design on cotton (mid to mid thick in thickness) is done with the Tsutsugaki method, freehand rice paste-resist dye. Some of the pictures shown here are taken from the back side (see picture 5 & 6). It shows the beautiful natural uneven colors which you will not see it in the newer nobori. Some faint storage stains show in the handles and white area. Actually, the color is tanned instead of white. Great home and office decoration piece. We cannot recommend cutting good nobori like this but you may need when you adjusted the length. The handles are not included in our measurements. 27 inches x 200 inches (16 feet 8 inches) long. The design area with Samurais is 129 inches long.
