Antique Japanese Hina Dolls, Large Edo Musician Ningyo

There are two types of costumes for the musician dolls, Kamishimo or Suou (su-ou). The dolls that we offer here are wearing Suou, which were worn by aristocrats and high ranking warriors at the time.

Their faces and heads are clean without damages. The clothes are made out of old silk brocade; the brown top kimonos of the three dolls appear to be covered with strips of paper. This is nothing uncommon in Japanese objects since paper held heavy weight as material and was often woven into textiles in the old time. These papers have age damage from the right side to the back. The three sitting dolls are 9 inches tall; two dolls on the stools are 10 1/4 inches tall sitting on 2 1/4 inch stools. These stools are made out of old bamboo and they were actually used for the Japanese tea ceremony. They are quite expensive themselves. The case will be available with the purchase of the dolls.
